#2 July 29. 1959 J.S.K, The Daily News has been attempting at odd times in the last few weeks to build up in the public mind an idea that the gambling and racketeering interests are breaking their hearts to have Safety Director Reynolds re¬ moved and also Manager Puller. Facts are there is only one gambling syndi¬ cate here. It is headed by Charlie Thomas, who for years has been reputed Dan Mahoney's principal political contact for votes among the gambling ele¬ ment. Hardly any of the syndicate's bookie joints have been molested by Reynolds and they are eminently pleased with the present set up. John Tempest and his sister Elipabeth came in today with a letter from Edward H. Butler, editor of the Buffalo Evening News. It developed that they were hitch-hiking around the world and wanted to sell us a series of articles on Miami. They told me that they had sold some material to the Sunday editor of the Beacon Journal in Akron. I turned them down in spite of Mr. Butler's enthusiastic recommendation of them. With, regards, I am EH:MP
