Knight Editor Emeritus The Miami Herald One Herald Plaza Miami, Florida 33101 Dear Mr. Knight: You will be very pleased to learn that our conference on "The U.S. and the Caribbean Basin, Critical Issues for the 1980's" held on February 23-24 was very successful and has been acclaimed by our University community, the press, television and the public. We are now in the process of organizing our conference on "New Faces and Challenges in the Middle East", which will take place on March 23rd and 24th, 1981. Among the speakers who will participate in the conference are Dr. John B. Kelly, whose book on Arabia, the Gulf and the West is a most outstanding contribution to the evaluation of Arab-West relations. It has become a best seller and has been very favorably reviewed by leading newspapers and journals. We will also have with us Ambassador Tahseen Basheer, recently appointed Ambassador of Egypt to Canada, and Professor Fouad Ajami, who has just re¬ turned from a long trip in the Middle East and will report on the situation there. In addition, we will also have a number of outstanding American scholars, such as Professor Bernard Lewis of Princeton, Professor Rouhollah K. Ramazani of the University of Virginia, Professor Alexandre Bennigsen of the Univer¬ sities of Chicago and Paris, as well as others. At this conference we will have observers from the State Department, the Defense Department and the White House. We are enclosing the program of the conference and we trust that you will find it possible to attend one or more sessions.
