December 26, 1978 Mr. Gene Roberts, Executive Editor The Philadelphia Inquirer 400 North Broad Street Philadelphia, PA 19101 Dear Gene: Thank you so much for your nice letter concerning the contribution of the Knight Foundation to the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press. As you know. Gene Miller has been pushing me on this subject for many months. His Initial request for $1,000,000 placed me in a state of shock from which I did not recover until last month. That is when I urged the $150,000 contribution to the Reporters1 group. Seriously, I understand the great importance of the effort that is being made to preserve freedom of expression. My one reservation Is that the Reporters Committee seems to be linked almost entirely to one man. Jack Landau. If he became 111, who would take his place? Do you have a strong organizational program? Who carries on? Why should a foundation underwrite the cost of ahheadquarters when the questions stated In this letter have yet to be satisfac¬ torily answered? In short, what is the Committee's future? In addition, I would appreciate any further information which you think would be valuable to our Foundation. I, too, hope that our paths may cross before too long. That is the problem with bigness. We get together so Infrequently. Best, John S. Knight JSK:ms
