jffclctMpltm llnquircr 400 NORTH BROAD STREET PHILADELPHIA, PA. 19101 215 LO 3-1600 PHILADELPHIA NEWSPAPERS, INC. CREED C. BLACK EDITOR March 7, 1972 Mr. John S. Knight The Akron Beacon Journal 44 E. Exchange Street Akron, Ohio 44309 Dear Jack: Just in case you missed it, here's a tearsheet of the way we handled the letter from Mr. Devenney. We were unanimously agreed here that the portion of the letter quoting from that book was totally irrelevant. I called Devenney and told him I thought that way and would probably eliminate it. He said he felt it was important but told me to use my own judgement. I said in the editor's note that the letter had been condensed. For your information, I am enclosing a copy of the original story. It ap¬ peared at the bottom of the Metropolitan Page, and you will note that it was rel¬ atively brief. Furthermore, the Cardinal's remarks were subordinated to a new development in the court. That hardly strikes me as "sensational" treatment. And as a matter of news value, I would agree with Andy Wallace that the attack on the opponents of state aid was more newsworthy than a repetition of the argument that Catholic schools serve the whole community. For your further information, I am also enclosing a copy of the memo Andy Wallace gave the city desk when the story was questioned. Please let me assure you that I am not insensitive to the delicacy of our re¬ lations with the Catholic Hierarchy in a city with as large a Catholic population as Philadelphia has. I don't think, however, we should remain silent on major issues of public policy simply because their views are not in accord with those of Cardinal Krol, who happens to be one of the more conservative spokesmen for the church. But we will certainly continue to try to state our case dispassionately. If you have any suggestions on this, I would welcome your advice.
