May 30, 1974 Daar Clifton: Thank yon for yonr Utter of May 22 concerning my Notebook column. Contrary to yonr belief, X did not eay that ffhe New York Timer predicted the recignation of President Nixon "within 48 hours." I did advert to storiee in The New York Times predicting resignation, and It was in this context that X mentioned the rumor attributed to "an influential Bepublican Senator not normally given to idle gossip. • . who obtained it from a senior administration official." As you can see, there is quite a difference, and not merely an exercise in semantics, either. As for your last paragraph, X find this to be a complete non sequltur. X, too, "am happy to speak up for our profession," and X too have found the press "far more accurate than the White House." But this Is not the nub of the matter. News* papers are today suffering from.a loss of credibility, and the continuing use of unnamed "sources." Xt does not impress the reader as a demonstration of responsibility. X still think this Is a subject which should be discussed in some of our professional meetings, rather than listening to some of the aon*aewspaper subjects to which the editors were subjected recently in Atlanta.
