AMERICAN SMELTING AND REFINING COMPANY ISO BROADWAY NEW YORK 5, N. Y. OGERW. STRAUS CHAIRMAN OF BOARD OF DIRECTORS January 21, 1957 Mr. John S. Knight Akron Beaoon Journal 44 East Exchange Street Akron 8, Ohio Dear Mr. Knight: Recently you received a letter and brochure from Benjamin F. Fairless outlining the program and accomplishments of the National Conference of Christians and Jews. For the past six years a Special Gifts Conmittee of the National Conference of Christians and Jews has organized to raise $500,000 as part of the national overall income budget. As you know, the work of the Conference is dedicated to building intergroup cooperation, harmony, and understanding among Catholics, Jews, and Protestants. This year it is ny honor to have been made National Chairman of the Special Gifts Committee. The Conference is desirous of enlisting a group of men throughout the country who will lend their leadership in this Special Gifts work. Will you join me by becoming a member of the Conmittee? Only a small portion of your time will be required. At most, we should like you to contact, by any method you prefer, a small number of 10 to 20 of your fellow citizens for suggested gifts of $250 to $1,000 (exceptions, of course). The Campaign begins during Brotherhood Week in late February, but you can elect to do your part during any convenient time from February to September 30, the closing date. Mr. Earl Kalp, National Conference Director for your region, will be glad to be of any assistance you desire in helping to select prospects and for any of the detail work you may wish to have done. You can be of great help in this vital work and I shall be grateful for your decision to join with me in this endeavor.
