JDP to .JSK -• , . _Everglades National Park is a major achievement«- It got under way when Spessard L. Holland, U.S. Senator and former governor, suggested to you that it could be achieved if The Herald got behind it. The park had been authorized by Congress some 25 years before with the proviso that it must cost the United States nothing tc acquire the necessary acreage. Interest had all but died, a minor spark being kept alive by Ernest F. Coe~who was in his 8O3, and inept. We induced the governor, Millard F. Caldwell to reactivate an Everglades National Park Commission, authorized by the Legislature years before, and through it as an agency got a S2 million appropriation from the Legislature with which to purchase private inholdings. The state also contributed some one million acres which it owned.
