Lecturer on Chemistry and Physics to the London Conservatoire of Mustc. Formerly Manager Horseley Fields Chemical Works Wolverhampton. (^Continued from page 52.) ^ THE "REACTION" OF "EUPHORBIA GUM." Y this term I do not mean to refer again to resinoid acid or acids previously alluded being normally present in " E. G.," 3- moment upon a characteristic which is noticeable for one or two reasons, not the least important of these being the fact that a very simple experiment J f suggests a point of some practical value in relation to the subsequent manipulation of the gum. If any convenient quantity of E. G.—preferably taken from the inner part of the potato-like nodules described last month—be carefully powdered and macerated in successive portions with a comparatively small bulk of cold distilled water,* it will generally be found that the latter, when separated from the gum and filtered, is no * This must be freshly drawn over, perfectly neutral, and should give no marked colouration with " Nessler's Reagent." longer absolutely neutral. The ordinary " test-papers " indicate the presence of a little acid of some kind ; and, varying the experiment somewhat, if the powdered E. G. be immersed in a large quantity of water—or, better still, be subjected to the action of a continuous slow current— for some days, a stage will be reached whereat the gum, taken out of the washing current and rubbed up with a small quantity of pure water for any length of time, will no longer yield an "acid " filtrate. In this connection it may be observed that not only do different parcels of E. G. exhibit very great variations in their respective* "acidifying" powers, but this difference is to be found even amongst the individual nodules contained in a single package. Some illustrations of this fact will be given in a tabular form before the conclusion of this series of articles. Now for the practical lesson to which the foregoing necessarily leads :—If equal weights of raw and well-washed E. G.—both, however, being freed from all traces of adherent and occluded moisture—be separately mixed, or, in other words, " masticated," with similar proportions of pure rubber, and subsequently manipulated in any of the various ways perfectly well-known to all the readers of this journal, the resulting products, although they may have been treated in the same manner side by side with scrupulous exactitude, will not be alike by any means. Some of the differences are so marked that I think they will not be wholly uninstructive if I exhibit them in
